Overview

Dioscorea rhizome is a botanical drug and dietary supplement derived from the dried rhizomes of *Dioscorea* species, primarily *Dioscorea opposita* Thunb. (also known as *Dioscorea batatas* or *Dioscorea polystachya*). It is widely utilized in traditional East Asian medicine for its antioxidant, hypolipidemic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates that the powdered form or extracts of the rhizome can attenuate atherosclerosis by reducing oxidative stress, lowering total cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels, and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase. Furthermore, it has been identified as a potential prebiotic-like agent that promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, specifically *Akkermansia muciniphila*, which is associated with improved glucose tolerance and anti-obesity effects.
