Overview
Dioscoreae Rhizoma, commonly known as Shanyao or Chinese yam, is the dried rhizome of *Dioscorea opposita* Thunb. (also classified as *Dioscorea polystachya*). It is a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used to reinforce the spleen and stomach, promote fluid production, and benefit the lungs and kidneys. The herb contains a variety of bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides, steroid saponins (such as diosgenin), allantoin, and polyphenols. It has been clinically investigated for its potential in managing type 2 diabetes mellitus, diabetic neuropathy, and gastrointestinal disorders. In 2011, the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) approved a standardized extract of Dioscoreae Rhizoma for clinical use.
