Overview

Dioxidine (hydroxymethylquinoxalinedioxide) is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibacterial agent belonging to the quinoxaline 1,4-dioxide class. It has been used primarily in Russia and former Soviet countries for the treatment of severe purulent-inflammatory processes, including sepsis and peritonitis. In a clinical research context led by West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov Medical University, dioxidine is being investigated as a metaphylactic treatment to prevent the recurrence of infection-related kidney stones (struvite stones) following percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL). The drug is administered via intrarenal instillation to target and eliminate residual bacterial colonization within the renal collecting system, which is a primary driver of stone formation. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis and the induction of structural damage to the bacterial nucleoid, particularly under anaerobic conditions.
