Overview

Dioxopromethazine hydrochloride is a phenothiazine-class small molecule that serves as a potent antitussive and first-generation antihistamine. Chemically, it is the sulfone derivative (S,S-dioxide) of promethazine. It is primarily indicated for the symptomatic treatment of various types of cough, including those associated with acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and other respiratory tract infections. Its pharmacological profile includes antagonism of the Histamine H1 receptor, which provides anti-allergic effects, and a direct inhibitory effect on the cough center in the central nervous system. Additionally, it exhibits mild anti-inflammatory and local anesthetic properties. It is widely utilized in the Chinese pharmaceutical market both as a single-agent formulation and in combination products.
