Overview

Dioxybenzone is an organic compound and a derivative of benzophenone used as a sunscreen agent. It functions as a chemical UV filter by absorbing UV-B and short-wave UV-A (UVA-II) rays, thereby limiting their penetration into human skin. Approved for use in concentrations up to 3%, dioxybenzone is insoluble in water but moderately soluble in ethanol and isopropanol, contributing to the "waterproof" claims of some sunscreens. Its mechanism of action involves direct absorption of harmful ultraviolet radiation, providing photoprotection against sunburn and photoaging. There is evidence from animal models that it may also exhibit chemopreventive activity against skin carcinogenesis correlated with antioxidant potency. While some related benzophenones have weak estrogenic effects environmentally, this has not been established for dioxybenzone[1][3][4][5].
