Overview

Dipentamethylenethiuram disulfide is a small molecule used primarily as an accelerator and vulcanizing agent in the rubber industry. It is also a standardized chemical allergen found in latex gloves and other rubber products commonly encountered in homes and offices. Medically, it is used as a component of the Thiuram Mix for epicutaneous patch testing (T.R.U.E. TEST), which aids in diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis by identifying sensitivity to specific allergens. Its physiologic effect involves increased histamine release and cell-mediated immunity[1][2][3][4]. The T.R.U.E. TEST containing this compound was approved by the FDA in 1994 for use as an aid in diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis[1].
