Dipentast is a gadolinium-based complex, specifically the sodium salt of gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Na2[Gd-DTPA]), used mainly in research and as an experimental agent in gadolinium neutron capture therapy (GdNCT) for cancer. It acts as a neutron sensitizer by delivering gadolinium to tumor tissues, where following neutron irradiation, the high neutron-capture cross-section of ^157Gd leads to emission of ionizing radiation locally in the tumor, causing cell death. Dipentast has also been evaluated as a contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), similar to other Gd-DTPA complexes, but is primarily notable for experimental oncology use rather than routine diagnostic imaging. Accumulation is typically extracellular, and efficacy in GdNCT depends on achieving sufficient gadolinium concentrations in tumor tissue. Dipentast is closely related to other Gd-DTPA agents, such as those used in clinical MRI, but is itself not clinically approved for standard medical use.
