Overview

Dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate, widely known by the trade name SYN-AKE, is a synthetic tripeptide developed by Pentapharm Ltd (now part of DSM). It is designed as a biomimetic of Waglerin-1, a polypeptide found in the venom of the Temple Viper (*Tropidolaemus wagleri*). The peptide acts as a reversible antagonist of the muscular nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nmAChR). By binding to the epsilon subunit of the receptor, it prevents acetylcholine from binding, thereby inhibiting muscle contraction at the neuromuscular junction. This mechanism leads to muscle relaxation, which is utilized in topical cosmetic formulations to reduce the appearance of dynamic facial wrinkles, such as forehead lines and crow's feet, serving as a non-invasive alternative to botulinum toxin.
