Overview
A combination therapy that pairs a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor with metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. DPP-4 inhibitors prevent the enzymatic degradation of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP), which enhances insulin secretion and reduces glucagon secretion. Metformin primarily reduces hepatic glucose output and improves insulin sensitivity. This combination provides complementary mechanisms of action that effectively target multiple defects in diabetes pathophysiology, including impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, and inappropriate glucagon secretion.
