Diphencyprone (also known as diphenylcyclopropenone or DPCP) is a topically administered experimental small molecule drug primarily used in dermatology for the treatment of alopecia areata and recalcitrant viral warts. It is not approved by the FDA or EMA but is used off-label in some centers. The drug acts as a potent topical sensitizing agent that induces allergic contact dermatitis at the site of application. This immune response is thought to divert autoreactive immune cells away from hair follicles in alopecia areata, thereby promoting hair regrowth. In warts, it triggers a hypersensitivity reaction that stimulates the immune system to clear human papillomavirus-infected tissue. Diphencyprone has also been investigated for use in cutaneous metastases of melanoma[1][3][4][5][6].
