Overview
NGC Cough Syrup is a multi-ingredient oral solution developed by Sygen Pharmaceuticals for the symptomatic relief of cough, bronchial congestion, and upper respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion and runny nose. The product was originally part of the Nigerian German Chemicals (NGC) portfolio before being transitioned to Sygen. It functions through a combination of active ingredients: diphenhydramine hydrochloride acts as a first-generation antihistamine and antitussive by antagonizing H1 receptors; ammonium chloride serves as an expectorant by increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of bronchial secretions; and sodium citrate acts as a systemic alkalinizer and mucolytic. Menthol is also included to provide a cooling sensation and local anesthetic effect in the throat. The syrup is approved for both adult and pediatric use in Nigeria.
