Overview

Diphenylguanidine (DPG) is a small molecule used primarily as a complexing agent in the detection of metals and organic bases and as an accelerator in the vulcanization of rubber. It is also found in some rubber products such as latex gloves. In medicine, diphenylguanidine serves as a standardized chemical allergen for use in epicutaneous patch tests (such as Carba Mix and T.R.U.E. TEST) to aid in diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis, particularly for individuals suspected of sensitivity to certain rubber chemicals. The mechanism of action for its diagnostic use involves eliciting an immune response on the skin to identify sensitization; however, no specific molecular target or pharmacological mechanism has been described[1][2][3]. Diphenylguanidine is approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA for this diagnostic indication.
