Overview

Infanrix Polio + Hib (also known as Infanrix-IPV+Hib) is a pentavalent combination vaccine developed by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) Biologicals. It is designed for active immunization in infants and young children against five major infectious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis (polio), and invasive diseases caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The vaccine is formulated as a suspension for deep intramuscular injection and contains diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, three purified acellular pertussis antigens (pertussis toxoid, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin) adsorbed onto aluminum salts, inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, and purified polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate (PRP) capsular polysaccharide of Hib conjugated to tetanus toxoid. In clinical trials, such as those sponsored by Örebro Läns Landsting in Sweden, Infanrix Polio + Hib has also been evaluated for re-immunization of patients who have lost vaccine-acquired immunity following autologous or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
