Overview
The diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis vaccine (adsorbed) produced by the Butantan Foundation is a trivalent combination vaccine used for active immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. It contains purified diphtheria and tetanus toxoids along with inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis bacteria, all adsorbed onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine induces the production of specific antitoxins that neutralize the toxins produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Clostridium tetani, while the whole-cell pertussis component triggers a broad immune response against various bacterial antigens. This vaccine is a critical component of pediatric vaccination programs in Brazil, manufactured locally to ensure supply for the national health system.
