This pentavalent combination vaccine, developed by CanSino Biologics, is designed to protect infants and children against five major infectious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, and invasive diseases caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). A key feature of this vaccine is its use of CanSino's proprietary 'component' acellular pertussis (DTcP) technology. Unlike traditional DTaP vaccines that use co-purified pertussis antigens, this genetically engineered vaccine contains three purified pertussis antigens (pertussis toxoid, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin) that are produced and purified individually before being combined in defined ratios. This approach is intended to ensure batch-to-batch consistency and potentially improve safety and immunogenicity. The vaccine also incorporates inactivated poliovirus (IPV) and a Hib capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein. While the trivalent DTcP component is in late-stage development (Phase III/Priority Review in China), the full pentavalent combination is currently in early-stage clinical trials.
