Diphtheria + tetanus + acellular pertussis vaccine is a combination immunizing agent used to protect against three serious bacterial diseases: diphtheria, tetanus (lockjaw), and pertussis (whooping cough). The "acellular" component refers to the use of purified antigens from Bordetella pertussis rather than whole-cell preparations, reducing side effects. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against toxins produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria), Clostridium tetani (tetanus), and Bordetella pertussis (pertussis). This results in immunity that prevents infection or reduces disease severity upon exposure. There are two main formulations: DTaP for children under 7 years old and Tdap as a booster for older children, adolescents, and adults[3][5][8]. These vaccines are widely recommended as part of routine immunization schedules.
