Overview

A **combination vaccine** that protects against five serious diseases: **diphtheria**, **tetanus**, **pertussis (whooping cough)**, **hepatitis B**, and **Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)**[2]. It contains toxoids or antigens from each pathogen: diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, whole-cell Bordetella pertussis, hepatitis B surface antigen, and conjugated Hib antigen. The vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies against all five pathogens, providing immunity and preventing illness. It is mainly used in infants and young children, typically in national immunization programs for routine childhood vaccination. The developer and manufacturer depend on the brand; UNICEF, WHO, and GAVI have procured and supported its adoption widely in lower- and middle-income countries[2]. The mechanism of action is immunological priming: each component elicits antigen-specific immune responses leading to the production of protective antibodies (neutralization of toxins, blocking pathogen entry, and opsonization of bacteria). The Hib component is conjugated to a carrier protein to boost immunogenicity. Primary indications are the prevention of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B infection, and invasive disease by Haemophilus influenzae type b in infants and young children.
