Overview

It consists of an injectable component containing adsorbed diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis antigens, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen, and a conjugated Hib capsular polysaccharide, administered alongside an oral live-attenuated poliovirus vaccine (OPV). While modern hexavalent vaccines increasingly utilize inactivated poliovirus (IPV) in a single injection (e.g., Infanrix Hexa, Vaxelis), this specific combination using OPV has been widely employed in global health programs and clinical trials, particularly in regions where OPV remains a core component of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The regimen induces active immunity through a variety of mechanisms, including toxin neutralization and the induction of systemic and mucosal antibodies against viral and bacterial pathogens.
