Overview

This is a hexavalent combination vaccine containing a **5-component acellular pertussis vaccine** (DTaP5), **hepatitis B vaccine**, **inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV)**, and **Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine**. It induces active immunity against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, hepatitis B virus, and invasive Hib disease through antibody production against toxoids, inactivated pathogens, and surface antigens. Administered intramuscularly to infants starting at 6 weeks of age in a 3- or 4-dose series (depending on brand), it reduces injection burden compared to separate vaccines while maintaining comparable immunogenicity, though some studies note slightly lower responses for Hib and tetanus antigens. Branded as **Vaxelis** (Merck/Sanofi) in the US and **Infanrix hexa** internationally, it is a standard pediatric vaccine per CDC and WHO schedules.[2][6][7][9]
