This drug is a combination vaccine containing inactivated (adsorbed) forms of the toxins produced by Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria) and Clostridium tetani (tetanus). The "toxoid" refers to a toxin that has been rendered non-toxic but still elicits an immune response. Adsorption onto an adjuvant such as aluminum enhances immunogenicity. The vaccine stimulates the body to produce antibodies against both toxins, providing protection from these diseases. It does not treat active infection but is used for prevention through immunization. This combination is typically administered as Td for individuals 7 years or older and as DT for children who cannot receive pertussis-containing vaccines[1][4][5][6]. It is highly effective, with clinical efficacy rates near 100% for tetanus and about 97% for diphtheria after a complete series[1].
