Overview

Dipipanone is a strong opioid analgesic used for the management of moderate to severe pain, particularly in situations where morphine is indicated but cannot be used due to allergy or intolerance. It is structurally related to methadone and belongs to the 4,4-diphenylheptane-3-one class of opioids. Dipipanone acts primarily by binding to mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, altering both the perception and emotional response to pain. It has a rapid onset and shorter duration of action compared with methadone. The drug can cause dependence and withdrawal symptoms if discontinued abruptly. Dipipanone is most commonly available as an oral formulation, often combined with cyclizine (as in Diconal) for additional antiemetic effects.
