Overview

Dipotassium glycyrrhizinate is the dipotassium salt of glycyrrhizic acid, a compound derived from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra). It is widely used for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-allergic, and skin-soothing properties. Mechanistically, it inhibits phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase activity—key enzymes in inflammatory pathways—and suppresses the formation of prostaglandins. It also inhibits hyaluronidase and reduces the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-alpha and NF-κB translocation. Clinically and cosmetically, it is indicated for chronic hepatitis (to reduce liver inflammation), eczema, dermatitis, rosacea (to soothe inflamed skin), gingival inflammation (oral care), burns/wounds healing support, as well as in products targeting hyperpigmentation due to its ability to inhibit tyrosinase activity involved in melanin synthesis. Additionally reported benefits include hepatoprotective effects and potential antitumorigenic activity[1][2][3][5].
