Dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (also known as dibasic potassium phosphate) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula K₂HPO₄. It is widely used as a pharmaceutical excipient, buffering agent, and active pharmaceutical ingredient. Clinically, it is utilized as an electrolyte replenisher to treat or prevent hypophosphatemia, particularly in patients who cannot receive oral or enteral nutrition. It provides essential potassium and phosphate ions, which are critical for maintaining cellular membrane potential, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, bone mineralization, and various metabolic processes, including the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). It is commonly formulated in combination with monobasic potassium phosphate as an intravenous injection or oral supplement.
