Overview

Dipotassium oxalate is an inorganic compound composed of potassium and oxalate ions, commonly appearing as a white crystalline solid and highly soluble in water. It is primarily used as a reagent in analytical chemistry for determination of calcium and other metal ions, due to its ability to form insoluble complexes. Dipotassium oxalate is also used in the food industry as a food additive, in the preparation of dyes and pigments, and as an active ingredient in products for the treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity. Topical applications, such as oral rinses or dental strips containing dipotassium oxalate monohydrate, have been evaluated for reducing dentinal hypersensitivity, with mixed clinical evidence: some studies demonstrate short-term reduction in tooth sensitivity, particularly with professional application, while others show inconsistent results compared to placebo. Dipotassium oxalate should be handled with care, as oxalates can be toxic at high concentrations and may cause irritation or more serious effects if ingested[1][2][3][5].
