Overview

Diprophylline (also known as dyphylline) is a xanthine derivative and theophylline analog with bronchodilator and vasodilator properties. It is primarily used in the treatment of respiratory disorders such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and cardiac dyspnea. Diprophylline acts mainly by antagonizing adenosine receptors and inhibiting phosphodiesterase enzymes (notably type III or IV), leading to increased cyclic AMP levels in smooth muscle cells. This results in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and dilation of airways. Additional effects include mild diuretic action and stimulation of the central nervous system's respiratory centers[2][5][6]. The drug is administered orally.
