Dipropofol (LB001) is a biphenyl derivative and a dimer of the widely used anesthetic propofol. Developed by Xi'an Libang Pharmaceutical, it is specifically designed as an anticonvulsant for the treatment of epilepsy and status epilepticus. Unlike propofol, which is a potent general anesthetic, dipropofol is engineered to retain significant anticonvulsant properties while minimizing the sedative and hypnotic effects that typically limit the use of propofol in non-surgical settings. Its mechanism of action involves the positive allosteric modulation of the Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, which enhances inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system to suppress seizure activity. The drug is primarily administered intravenously and has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials in China for its safety and efficacy in managing refractory status epilepticus.
