Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Diprotin A (isoleucine-proline-isoleucine) is a naturally occurring tripeptide that acts as a competitive inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4, also known as CD26). Originally isolated from *Bacillus cereus*, it is widely utilized as a research tool to study the regulation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which are crucial for glucose homeostasis. In addition to its role in metabolic research, diprotin A is investigated for its ability to enhance the homing and engraftment of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells by preventing the degradation of stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1/CXCL12) by DPP-4. It has also been studied in the context of fungal infections, where it is exported in extracellular vesicles by *Cryptococcus* species and modulates fungal physiology and pathogenesis.
