Overview

Dipsaci Radix is the dried root of *Dipsacus asper* Wall. ex DC. (synonym *Dipsacus asperoides* C.Y.Cheng & T.M.Ai), a plant in the Caprifoliaceae family. It is a staple of traditional Chinese and Korean medicine, where it is used to tonify the liver and kidneys, strengthen bones and tendons, and treat conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and bone fractures. The pharmacological profile of Dipsaci Radix is characterized by a high content of triterpenoid saponins (notably asperosaponin VI, also known as Akebia Saponin D), iridoids (such as sweroside and loganic acid), and phenolic acids. These constituents exert anti-inflammatory, anti-osteoporotic, and antithrombotic effects by modulating several key signaling pathways, including the NF-κB, MAPK, BMP-Smad, and Nrf2/HO-1 axes. Research indicates that it promotes osteoblastic differentiation and mineralization while inhibiting osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption.
