Overview

Dipyridamole + rubidium-82 is a combination used in myocardial perfusion imaging, specifically for the noninvasive diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) using positron emission tomography (PET). Dipyridamole acts as a pharmacologic vasodilator, inducing hyperemia by increasing coronary blood flow. Rubidium-82 is a radioactive potassium analog radiopharmaceutical that is rapidly taken up by viable myocardium proportional to blood flow via sodium-potassium ATPase pumps. Areas with reduced perfusion or infarction show decreased uptake on PET imaging. This combination allows assessment of myocardial perfusion under pharmacologic stress conditions, especially in patients unable to undergo exercise-based stress testing[2][6][8]. Rubidium-82 is supplied as a generator product (e.g., Cardiogen-82 Generator, Ruby-Fill Generator) and has a very short half-life (~1.27 minutes)[5][6].
