Overview

Dipyrithione is a small molecule derivative of pyrithione with bactericidal and fungicidal properties. It was formerly marketed as an anti-dandruff agent in shampoos (notably under the brand name Crimanex), but is no longer available for pharmaceutical use. Currently, it is primarily used as a pesticide. Dipyrithione acts by disrupting microbial cell function, leading to its antimicrobial effects. It has also demonstrated cytotoxic and broad-spectrum antitumor activity in preclinical studies, suggesting potential for anticancer drug development[6][8]. Pyrithione derivatives are widely used as cosmetic preservatives and anti-dandruff agents.
