Overview

This entry refers to a randomized, phase 2 investigator-initiated clinical trial conducted by the University Center of Araraquara (Uniara) that compared the efficacy of dipyrone (metamizole) and acetaminophen (paracetamol) for postoperative pain control following third molar surgery. The study involved 30 patients randomized to receive either 500 mg of dipyrone or 750 mg of acetaminophen every 6 hours. Results demonstrated that dipyrone provided superior pain relief compared to acetaminophen over the 48-hour study period. Both medications are small molecule analgesics; dipyrone is a pyrazolone derivative with analgesic, antipyretic, and spasmolytic properties, while acetaminophen is a non-opioid analgesic with central effects. This trial was academic and did not evaluate a fixed-dose combination of the two drugs, but rather compared them as separate monotherapies.
