diquafosol sodium

Diquafosol sodium is a purinergic P2Y2 receptor agonist used for the treatment of dry eye syndrome. It functions by stimulating P2Y2 receptors located on the conjunctival epithelial cells and goblet cells, which triggers the secretion of water and mucin into the tear film. This dual action helps to stabilize the tear film and improve the health of the ocular surface. Originally developed by Inspire Pharmaceuticals and later licensed to Santen Pharmaceutical for Asian markets, it is widely approved and marketed in countries such as Japan, China, and South Korea. Clinical research has also explored its utility in managing dry eye symptoms associated with the use of orthokeratology lenses, particularly in pediatric and adolescent populations.
