Overview

DIR-NP is an experimental optical imaging agent composed of the deep infrared (DIR) fluorescent dye encapsulated within non-targeted poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles. Developed at the Yale University School of Medicine, it is utilized as a control or passive targeting agent in studies aimed at improving the intraoperative detection of epithelial ovarian cancer micrometastases. The nanoparticle platform is designed to accumulate in the tumor microenvironment, allowing for the visualization of microscopic residual disease that is otherwise difficult to distinguish during surgery. In preclinical models, DIR-NP has demonstrated the ability to delineate small tumor foci, although with lower efficiency compared to RGD-peptide-targeted versions (DIR-RGD-NP).
