DIR-RGD-NP is an experimental tumor-targeting optical enhancer designed to aid in the intra-operative detection of ovarian cancer micrometastases. It consists of a deep infrared (DiR) fluorescent dye encapsulated within a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticle. The surface of the nanoparticle is functionalized with the arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD) peptide sequence, which specifically binds with high affinity to alpha-V beta-3 integrins overexpressed in tumor-associated neovasculature. By targeting the vasculature surrounding small tumor implants, DIR-RGD-NP allows for the visualization of lesions smaller than 1 mm, potentially improving the efficacy of surgical debulking and reducing microscopic residual disease.
