Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Direne is a veterinary nutritional supplement (nutraceutical) developed by Nextmune (formerly ICF) to support renal function in companion animals, specifically dogs and cats suffering from chronic renal insufficiency. The formulation utilizes a multi-faceted approach to manage the systemic consequences of kidney disease. Its primary mechanism involves the use of phosphate binders, such as chitosan and calcium carbonate, which sequester dietary phosphorus within the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its absorption and subsequent accumulation in the blood. It also contains nitrogen-binding agents like *Yucca schidigera* to reduce ammonia production. The supplement is enriched with plant-derived antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents, including *Astragalus membranaceus*, *Curcuma longa* (Turmeric), and Quercetin, which help mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation in renal tissues. Some formulations, such as the oral paste, also incorporate probiotics like *Enterococcus faecium* to support the gut-kidney axis by reducing the production of uremic toxins by intestinal microflora.
