Overview

Discodermolide is a polyketide natural product originally isolated from the marine sponge *Discodermia dissoluta*. It is a highly potent microtubule-stabilizing agent that promotes tubulin polymerization and assembly, leading to G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in tumor cells. Discodermolide is effective against multidrug-resistant cancer cell lines and demonstrates immunosuppressive as well as neuroprotective properties. The compound induces accelerated cellular senescence and exhibits synergistic antiproliferative effects in combination with paclitaxel. It was licensed for drug development and entered early-phase clinical trials as a potential antineoplastic agent. Owing to its scarcity in nature, discodermolide used in studies has been produced via total synthesis[1][2][4][5].
