Overview

Disodium ascorbyl phytostanol phosphate (FM-VP4) is a synthetic, water-soluble derivative of plant stanols, specifically sitostanol and campestanol, each covalently linked to ascorbic acid via a phosphodiester bond. Developed to improve solubility and efficacy over traditional plant sterols/stanols, FM-VP4 acts primarily as a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. It reduces intestinal cholesterol uptake by competing with dietary and biliary cholesterol for absorption in the gut. Preclinical studies demonstrated potent cholesterol-lowering effects without significant toxicity, while clinical trials showed that doses up to 800 mg/day are safe and well tolerated for at least four weeks. The maximum LDL-cholesterol reduction was observed at 400 mg/day. FM-VP4 also exhibits potential benefits in reducing plasma triglycerides, weight gain, and exerting anti-atherosclerotic effects[1][2][3][5][6].
