Overview

Disodium propofol phosphate is a water-soluble phosphate prodrug of the intravenous anesthetic agent propofol. It is designed to be converted into active propofol through hydrolysis by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzymes in the blood. This prodrug approach was developed to overcome the limitations of traditional lipid emulsion formulations of propofol, such as pain on injection, risk of lipid-related adverse effects, and potential for bacterial contamination. In clinical research, particularly in China, this agent (often identified by the code HX0507) has been evaluated for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. Specific studies, such as those conducted at The First Affiliated Hospital of the University of Science and Technology of China, have focused on determining the effective doses (ED50 and ED95) in specialized patient populations, including kidney transplant recipients with end-stage renal disease or uraemia, and exploring the correlation between drug efficacy and serum alkaline phosphatase levels.
