Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Disofenin is an iminodiacetic acid (IDA) derivative that, when radiolabeled with technetium-99m (Tc-99m), serves as a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical for hepatobiliary imaging (cholescintigraphy). It is primarily indicated for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis and the evaluation of hepatobiliary tract patency and function. Following intravenous administration, the Tc-99m disofenin complex is rapidly cleared from the bloodstream by hepatocytes via active transport mediated by organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs), specifically OATP1B1 and OATP1B3. It is subsequently excreted unconjugated into the bile canaliculi via multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2), allowing for the visualization of the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts.
