Overview

Dispersin B is a recombinant glycoside hydrolase enzyme originally produced by the bacterium Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. It acts as a broad-spectrum antibiofilm agent by hydrolyzing the β-1,6-glycosidic linkages in poly-N-acetylglucosamine (PNAG), a key structural polysaccharide in bacterial biofilms. By breaking down PNAG, Dispersin B disrupts established biofilms and inhibits their formation, thereby sensitizing bacteria to antibiotics and host immune responses. The enzyme does not possess direct antibacterial activity but enhances the efficacy of antimicrobials when used in combination. Its primary clinical development focus is for wound care—specifically as a hydrogel dressing for chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, burns, and post-surgical wounds. Kane Biotech has led its commercial development; manufacturing partners include BioVectra and Dow Development Laboratories.
