Overview

Ditan Qingnao Fang (涤痰清脑方) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula used primarily for the treatment of neurological disorders, especially those involving phlegm obstruction and disturbance of consciousness. The formula is composed of multiple herbs, typically including Pinellia ternata (Banxia), Arisaema consanguineum (Tian Nan Xing), Citrus reticulata peel (Chen Pi), Acorus tatarinowii (Shi Chang Pu), Gastrodia elata (Tian Ma), and others. Its mechanism of action is based on TCM theory—resolving phlegm, clearing the mind, opening orifices, and calming agitation. Modern pharmacological studies suggest potential neuroprotective effects, anti-inflammatory actions, improvement in cerebral circulation, and modulation of neurotransmitter systems. It has been studied mainly in the context of stroke recovery, vascular dementia, coma after brain injury or stroke, epilepsy with phlegm syndrome features in TCM diagnosis.
