Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dithioerythritol is a small molecule sulfur-containing sugar alcohol derived from the 4-carbon monosaccharide erythrose. It is an epimer of dithiothreitol (DTT). Dithioerythritol acts as a strong reducing agent and is primarily used in biochemical applications to protect sulfhydryl groups against oxidation and to reduce disulfide bonds in proteins and other molecules. Its reduction potential is about –0.331 V at pH 7. The compound is less efficient than DTT at lower pH due to higher pKa values for its thiols but otherwise serves similar functions in laboratory settings[1][2][3].
