Overview
Divalproex sodium is an anticonvulsant medication used primarily to treat seizure disorders (epilepsy), the manic phase of bipolar disorder, and to prevent migraine headaches. It is a stable coordination compound comprised of sodium valproate and valproic acid. The drug acts mainly by increasing brain levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps reduce excessive electrical activity in the brain. Additional mechanisms may include blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels and inhibition of histone deacetylase enzymes. Divalproex sodium is available only by prescription and comes in several oral dosage forms[1][2][3][4][5][6].
