Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Divalproex sodium is a stable coordination compound comprised of sodium valproate and valproic acid in a 1:1 molar relationship. It is primarily used as an anticonvulsant for the treatment of epilepsy, a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder, and for the prophylaxis of migraine headaches. Its mechanism of action is complex and multi-faceted, involving the enhancement of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) neurotransmission through the inhibition of GABA transaminase, blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels, and inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDAC). In the context of neurodegenerative research, divalproex has been investigated for its ability to inhibit glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3), which may reduce tau protein phosphorylation in Alzheimer's disease, and for its potential to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in Huntington's disease.
