dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate is a synthetic, esterified form of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) commonly used in dietary supplements and fortified foods. It is produced by combining synthetic racemic alpha-tocopherol (containing both D and L stereoisomers) with acetic acid to form an ester, which increases its stability and shelf life compared to the non-acetylated form. In the body, the ester bond is hydrolyzed to release active alpha-tocopherol. As a fat-soluble antioxidant, it protects cell membranes from oxidative damage by neutralizing free radicals generated during lipid oxidation. The "dl" prefix indicates a mixture of stereoisomers; this synthetic version has about half the biological activity of natural d-alpha-tocopherol on a weight basis[1][6][9]. It is primarily indicated for preventing or treating vitamin E deficiency but may also be found in cosmetic products due to its antioxidant properties.
