DLBS1033 is a bioactive protein fraction extracted from the earthworm Lumbricus rubellus. It contains a group of serine proteases known as lumbrokinase and consists of eight major proteins with molecular weights below 100 kDa. DLBS1033 exhibits antithrombotic and thrombolytic properties by degrading the α-, β-, and γ-chains of fibrinogen, reducing blood viscosity, inhibiting platelet aggregation, and promoting clot lysis. Its mechanism of action is similar to that of plasminogen activators in the fibrinolytic system. Clinical studies have shown that oral administration (with enteric coating for stability) improves functional outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke when used as an add-on therapy to standard care[1][2][3][5][6][7].
