DM-83 is an experimental drug candidate formerly developed by DiaMedica for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. The drug was designed to function through a novel "nerve reflex" mechanism, specifically targeting the hepatoportal nerve reflex to stimulate the release of Hepatic Insulin Sensitizing Substance (HISS). This pathway is intended to improve glucose disposal and insulin sensitivity in the post-prandial state. DM-83 reached Phase II clinical trials, where it demonstrated the ability to modulate insulin and glucose levels. However, development of the compound was eventually halted as DiaMedica shifted its strategic focus toward its recombinant protein candidate, DM199.
