DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) is a naturally occurring psychedelic compound found in various plants, animals, and endogenously in humans. It is known for producing intense but relatively short-lived hallucinogenic effects. DMT is being investigated for its therapeutic potential, particularly in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), as well as anxiety and cluster headaches. Its mechanism of action primarily involves agonism of several serotonin receptors, notably 5-HT2A, 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2C, which are believed to mediate its psychedelic and therapeutic effects. It also interacts with serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine transporters, and has been shown to modulate other systems including glutamate and sigma-1 receptors, contributing to its neuroplasticity-promoting effects.
