DMT310 is a novel, once-weekly topical drug candidate derived from the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris. Developed by Dermata Therapeutics, it is under investigation for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acne vulgaris and moderate-to-severe rosacea. The drug’s mechanism of action is multifaceted, combining mechanical and biochemical effects. When applied to the skin as a powder, its silica spicules create microchannels that enhance penetration of active compounds into deeper skin layers and stimulate natural healing processes. These sponge-derived particles also exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, helping reduce inflammatory lesions associated with acne and rosacea. In clinical trials, DMT310 has demonstrated significant reductions in both inflammatory and noninflammatory lesion counts compared to placebo without serious adverse events[1][2][3][6][8].
