Overview

This is a whole-cell cancer vaccine consisting of either autologous (patient-derived) or allogeneic (donor-derived) tumor cells that have been chemically modified with the hapten dinitrophenyl (DNP). Developed by the Hadassah Medical Organization, the vaccine is designed to treat various metastatic epithelial cancers, including melanoma, colorectal, gastric, ovarian, breast, lung, and kidney cancers. The tumor cells are irradiated to prevent proliferation and conjugated with DNP to increase their immunogenicity. When administered alongside the adjuvant BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin), the vaccine stimulates a potent cell-mediated immune response, specifically inducing T-cell activity and lymphocyte infiltration into metastatic sites, thereby promoting an inflammatory response against the tumor.
